52 Weeks of Wine – Week 27: Pinot Blanc (April 27th – May 4th 2019)

When I am tasting a wine and considering the varietal for my own consumption and palate (versus serving for party or a wine tasting event), I am looking for something unique. If a new wine or varietal is not distinctly different in taste from a common varietal (think Pinot Grigio, Sauv Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, you get the idea) and the price difference is significantly higher, I lose interest pretty quickly and categorize that varietal in the “meh” bin. “Meh” doesn’t mean it’s not a good wine, it just means, it’s not that special to me. I’m not unwilling to try anything from the “meh” category again, but I’m less likely to see it on a menu and think “ooo! I think I’ll order an overpriced glass of that and enjoy it!” So, unfortunately, Pinot Blanc got tossed in the “meh” bin.

This Pinot Blanc (or Pinot Bianco) was a good wine and it really resembled a blend between Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay. I will caveat that I am not a Pinot Grigio or a traditional Chardonnay girl, so that may be more explanation for why it didn’t blow my mind. The color was beautiful – a clear gold with light to medium body. The aromas were buttery with citrus and melon and a little swirl of rubber shower curtain and saran wrap. The taste really reminded me of a Chardonnay with buttery notes but a bit more acidic and a splash of pineapple. If you’re a Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio fan, this is definitely one for you to taste! This particular wine retails from $17 to $22, which at that price point, I believe you could find a much more exciting Pinot Grigio or Chardonnay for your money! I gave this a 2 out of 5 cork rating – sorry guys, it just didn’t knock my socks off!
